Neighbors had us over for Lights Out festival at 8:30pm and turned off all the house lights for an hour. We used their iPhone app of Skyview to find the stars. I remembered about 5 or 6 from 2 weeks ago at Carlsbad. Just downloaded it to my phone. No many stars out tonight with these LA lights.
Don't knock L.A. for basic stellar education. You can see the primary stars that make up most constellations. That's where you want to start. If you try to learn in a totally dark sky, you will be overwhelmed. After you know them, take your knowledge into darker sky areas. Also, don't use an app that doesn't show the sky in red (preferably) or green. It will ruin your night vision.
