For the same reason that the US oil industry is laying off thousands of workers right now. Short sighted business men in all kinds of fields buy into a "boom" mentality and try too hard to suck up a bigger share while a boom is going on. Then when the bust comes.....and it always does.....they are over-built and over staffed.
Daytona had a seating capacity of something like 145,000 at it's peak. WAY too much to be sustainable. Might still be too big but supply and demand will figure that out in a few years. I suspect that they will be able to fill most or all of the "cheap seats". The suites and other premium seats might be a different story. I do think they are overpriced.
And I fully understand that you might be bored with the "sport" right now. But I find it rather unusual that you feel a need to advertise and defend that boredom.
