We have stayed at Pontchartrain Landing several times. Easy drive into the city and we've worked out the parking problems. We went to the Christmas Eve Bonfires and had no problem getting to River road. We would like to stay at the state parks, but none are full service.
We also like to stay at Pontchartrain Landing. It is safe for New Orleans and it is nice being on the water. It is an easy drive to downtown and the French Quarter. It is also an easy drive to Metairie which has several of our favorite restaurants, (Drago's and Deannies)
They also have a decent restaurant on site with fair food if you are too tired to get out. For those that don't want to drive the 15 minutes to the French Quarter they have shuttle pick up. I do recommend paying the few dollars more for the deluxe pull through sites as they are bigger and are nicely landscaped.
