Newbies, Cape Cod w/ small Dog, mid-May

We're active 60-ish couple with tiny dog renting a 30' motor home from NJ in mid-May, 10 days. Any tips on getting to, and staying in, Cape Cod MA? Are dogs allowed on beaches in May? Would love to rent kayaks. Thinking of bringing our bicycles--any big hills? Want a campground that's CLEAN, well-tended, near ocean or bay (no lakes). Conversely, any campground we should AVOID? We are very excited about this adventure! Your advice is greatly appreciated.
  • Atlantic Oaks for sure. The cape is quite flat, with few hilly areas. You won't find any dog beaches.

One caution --- May can be iffy, weather-wise. Because the cape sticks out in the ocean, the seasons tend to be behind schedule. Cooler in spring and warmer in the fall.

Try Peters Pond Park in Sandwich. They've been under new ownership for a few years and reviews are much better. Not far from the canal and a number of beaches. As far has finding a beach for the dog, not likely. At that point in time most of the local beaches require permits and the national seashore beaches won't allow pets. PPP has a pond on the property but I don't know if they have a dog beach.

According to this, the National Seashore allows leashed dogs on all the beaches except for lifeguard protected beaches (looks like the lifeguards don't start work until mid June, so I would think that means dogs can go on any beaches before that). Unless I'm missing something? It's been years since I've been to the Cape with a dog, but we're planning to bring ours there this summer and were counting on getting them some beach time at the Natl Seashore...

  • Another vote for Atlantic Oaks. Down the street from the Campground is Salt Pond and Salt Pond Bay, great for Kayaking. We bring our own kayaks but I would guess there might be rentals near by, might ask the campground.

  • When you leave Atlantic Oaks and head towards P Town their is a place on the left hand side about one or two miles up the road that rents kayaks.
  • More and more RV parks offer dog walking services. They will come to your RV and walk your dog, for a nominal fee, if you are going to be gone for the day. Very few advertise this so you will need to call and ask.

I was not aware of that-thanks! We usually didn't venture that far down and the local beaches seem to have more restrictions. I usually go down for day trips in the off-season-it's been a while since I stayed a weekend with my dogs.
  • That is good to know. We take our dog everywhere. We've stayed away from the Cape due to all of the restrictions. No we can go during the shoulder seasons.
