Will you be stopping in the deleware water gap area? If you're just traveling straight through, an alternate route would be to take 87 s to 287 s to 78 w. Simple route, and except for rush hour, not too much traffic.
As far as 22 v 78, I actually prefer 22. Yeah, there is traffic around the Whitehall area, but in my opinion not too bad. 78 is a lot hillier. As mentioned, where the two highways converge is a mess no matter which one you're on.
