Newburgh, NY to Hershey, PA

Thanks for all the advice so far. We are fine tuning our route south to VA. So from Newburgh, NY to Hershey, PA is over 3 hours driving 84 to 81; is this accurate and would you drive straight through? We have never driven the route and this will be our first trip with the fiver. We are seeing different opinions on the road conditions.

We are trying to stay with the 2/2/2 rule. We will be 3 days in Hershey. Any rec's for a CG somewhat near the Hershey museum. Would like to spend a day seeing Amish sites as we have never been in this area of the country.

    We stayed at Country Haven in New Holland, PA. It's close to the attractions in Lancaster and about 30 ~ 40 minutes to Hersey and the RV show.

    I-84 to I-81 is a good route. If you don't want to drive straight thru, you could overnight at the Mohegan Sun Casino in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area.

    that might be a nice break for a newbie nervous nellie! Has anyone done this before and is this safe?

    The only troubles you might have are
    Binghamton, NY where they are rebuilding 81-17 and it is sometimes a crawl.

    between Scranton and South of Wilkes Barre where it is always congested and being rebuilt
    and from Frackville South to almost the junction with 78.
    Hit them all wrong and it can add 5-6 hours to the trip.
    I go this way frequently

    GO TO http://www.casinocamper.com/ to find about the casino camping.

    There is a FlyingJ at Pennsylvania exit 219 which will be very easy off-on for you

    X2 on country haven. It is a nice QUIET cg in a gorgeous location. No pool, playground, etc so if that's what you're looking for, choose another cg. Just taking a nice long walk in the area is amazing.

    From Newburgh, I'd just drive straight through. It's easily doable even for a newbie!

    An alternate route would be 87 to 287 to 78 west. Very easy route.

    Just a heads up - there is a section of 1 lane construction right now on 84 west of Port Jervis ( NY Exit 1). There are often delays during heavy traffic times. But overall not a bad route at all.

    If you choose to take 87 to 287 in NJ to 78 west to 81 fuel up in NJ. Fuel is MUCH less expensive than either NY or PA.

    84 to 81 will not take you through Binghamton, port jervis does have construction and near Scranton airport but still 2 lanes open. I see no reason for a lay over on route but if needed, Mohegan Sun just south of Scranton would be better choice than Flying J at Gibson, 219. Just don't know the policy at casino.

    We have stayed there overnight. It is safe.

    You are right I was thinking Albany area instead of further south
