NJ, DE, MD Beach campgrounds??

Any recomendations? We are looking for a last minute place to go for this upcoming Labor Day weekend. It's a long shot that we even find an open site I know but does not hurt to try. Regardless of that aspect, we live in the Philly suburbs so looking at NJ, DE, or MD campgrounds on the beach. Anyone have any recomendations. We have young children and would like preferably to be able to walk to the beach but if not possible a short drive is OK. In that case we would like a pool. Thanks for your thoughts.

Traffic along the Jersey shore is terrible because of the tourist influx from points north and west. Plus, there are just limited campgrounds - none near the beaches. Some county parks, but they are not close either, and parking would be the issue.

Are you active or retired Military or Reservist? You could look into Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck, NJ. Great little CG in there. They have a nice pool. The Army/Navy road - Normany Rd.- is a straight shot from the land side base to the water side base. NO LOCAL TRAFFIC allowed. It takes you out to the waterside base by Sandy Hook, and Gateway National Park.

Also, for Military is the Reserve Base in Sea girt. Much smaller base, not so pretty, and a little harder to find. The base did suffer some Sandy damage, so the bathhouses may not be open yet. Sea Girt is ON THE BEACH! Just a walk from the CG. No other amenities though. Just hook ups. But Sea Girt and surrounding areas are incredible.

Anyone that tells you DE beach traffic is less than NJ shore traffic has been hitting the pipe. It is just as bad. This year it is actually worse further down the seaboard. With all the beach community homes and some WHOLE COMMUNITIES destroyed by Sandy last year, the summer rental market has shifted heavily southward making DE and MD rentals premium and grossly overpriced.
  • we were at frontiertown this yr and really liked it. 5 minute drive to assateague or 10 minute to oc, md. there is lots to do at the campground and close by. It is a busy place though- so if quiet is your thing you may not like it.
  • There are two separate parks on Assateague. The State Park section and the other is the National Park. Your kids should like this, as the wild horses roam free. Not commercialized. Natural and very cool. The National Park has a gift shop on the way in/out. They have aquariums set up inside, and one of those things like binoculars mounted outside for looking around.

Last I knew anything, all of Assateague National Seashore is dry camping. They have a dump site you can use. And there is a place to get fresh water.

On the drive-in ocean side sites, generators are allowed during the day. You just walk over the dunes and you are on the beach.

A lot of the bayside is no generators at all - don't know if there are any places that generators are allowed on bayside in the day time. I've heard the bugs are worse, bayside.

The State Park section of Assateague has a few loops with electric hookups.

We have stayed at Big Oaks in DE. Not on the beach, but a short drive. We went up to Cape Henlopen State Park to go on the beach, when we camped at Big Oaks. Cape Henlopen has a camping section - but I don't think they have elec hook ups either.

We stopped by the Delaware Seashore mentioned above - we were in the car and scoping out places when we first got our MH. The person at the gate that we talked to was really rude, so we never bothered going back and actually camp there.

Castaways RV park and Frontiertown are near Berlin, MD - just outside of Ocean City. Castaways has a small beach on the bay. Very nice place but they priced themselves right out of our reach the last 2 years. They have a pool and a lot of activities for the kids. Frontiertown is nice. They have a waterpark for the kids and 2 pools. Arcade, western theme area. Not right on the beach, though. Son's family stays there every year.

As far as NJ beaches - we went that way one time. The traffic was horrendous. Everyone told us it was like that all the time. We never went back. Actually have friends who live in NJ, and they go to the DE beaches because of the NJ traffic.

Anyways, this will give you a few places to check out. Probably going to have trouble finding something this late, with a holiday weekend, but you never know.... things happen and people cancel.
    Good luck.
  • Assateague Nat Seashore. Might get lucky. There are ocean side & bay side sites. Most are dry camping. Headed there mid month, mid week. Should be nice & quiet then.
  • Best to get on the on line reservation or call around. You might get lucky and call right after someone made a cancellation.

I checked all Delaware State Park CG's and ALL are booked except non electric sites at Lums Pond, which is not near the beach.
