North Carolina between Charlotte and Ashville

Grandson is graduating H.S. next May. I know it's early but I'm anal when I get a thought in my head. DW and I want to go up for his graduation and also visit the Ashville area. Besides Campfire Landings does anyone have any recommendations for a place between Charlotte and Ashville? We have a 30 ft travel trailer, FHU is preferred but not required. Thanks for the help. No substitute for experiemce.
  • If you're taking US Hwy 74 to Ashville, stop off at John H. Moss Lake Recreation Park in Shelby, NC. A Kings Mountain city park, it's actually a few miles off Hwy 74 in Shelby. IIRC, rates were $20/night for FHUs. Kings Mountain Military Park is nearby. It offers a film on the revolutionary battle, regarded as the "turning point" of the war. Then you can stroll through the field of battle.

Easiest way to Asheville from Charlotte will take you to I40. And from there there are just a lot of CGs you can easily get to. One of them "bears" your name. Bear Den CG on the BRP, near Little Szitzerland. There is also a Yogi CG ay Marion NC, just off 40, and Linville Falls CG on the BRP is just 20 mins from Marion as well. And Tom Johnson has a huge CG at their dealership.
There is also Catawba Falls in Old Fort.

Off I-26 at the top of Saluda Grade, Orchard Lake is one of the prettiest CGs you would ever want to be in.
