Ashville and an RV

If you go downtown, be aware that the city has a contract with local towing company that "preys on out-of-state vehicles." Parked in half empty parking lot several years ago on a sunday. There are white lines & yellow lined spaces. When I returned an hour later, my truck has been towed to the company's business. I had to get a cab, go by a local atm & pay $140 cash to get my truck back (no checks or credit cards accepted). The only other vehicles at the site were from Georgia,Florida & other states (no NC vehicles). When I drove back by the downtown lot, they were towing another vehicle. Needless to say, my complaint to the city "fell on deaf ears" (obviously the contract netted the city lots of money). I will never visit Asheville again for that very reason. You can visit the Biltmore Estate, BUT do not park downtown.

Asheville should not be a problem. Lake Powhatan campground is a great place (it is a national park just off I-26 in Asheville) and is close to the NC Arberetum , Biltmore House , and downtown. If you are there on a Friday night, the drum circle downtown is a great happening from about 5 pm until dark.

If you like National Forest Service camping atmosphere, Lake Powhatan is very close, just a few minutes to Asheville, and can be booked on Reserve America. Some sites have electric hookups.

I-26 / I-40 / I-240 intersection requires some alertness because of lane changes, especially if traffic is heavy and you are unfamiliar with it.

wildtoad is most likely referring to Campfire Lodgings. Great campground altho premium sites run about $60. Be aware that it does require driving up a windy steep entryway. You'll be fine as large motorhomes visit. Good location for access to interstates if you choose rental car option.

Historic downtown has very narrow streets and tight turns. Double ditto re the trolley if you want to visit the more interesting spots.

Note too that the old overpasses on roads on Vanderbilt property can have a very low clearance.

We stayed at campfire camp ground and had a rental car delivered. Worked out fine. They came and picked it up after we left. The staff can arrange it for you.
