Northern Minnesota camping

Heard good things about the Grand Maris Campground. Right on Lake Superior. We are going to go up there this fall.

In the southern part of the state. Farm country with alot of amish folks selling crafts, furniture. West of Duluth try fishermans point, if you like listening the loons call in the evening. Alot of backroads to ride in this area and your not real far from the big lake.

On the west side of the state, plenty of back roads to ride on and the old mine area to explore. very open farm country.

Alot of state parks on the east side of the state, you will spend alot on entrance fees as they will want one on each vehicle. but lots of back roads along the St.Croix river.

Don't miss the National Scenic Byways that go through the Superior and Chippewa National Forests. The North Shore Scenic Drive runs up the Shore of Lake Superior and is rated as among the most scenic in the US. There are 8 state parks- most with beautiful waterfalls, the Superior National Forest, and a national monument along the 150 mile route, which runs from the port city of Duluth up to the Canadian Border. There are public campgrounds at the state parks, national forest and state forests. Also a few private campgrounds. The cities of Two Harbors has a great full service campground at Burlington Bay right on Lake Superior. The city of Grand Marais (much nearer the Canadian border) also has a full service city campground. There is another National Scenic Byway -the Gunflint Trail (a road and not a trail) that takes off to the northwest from Grand Marais and takes you into the heart of the national forest and to the edges of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. There are many lakes, resorts and outfitters along this byway and campgrounds too.

Had the whole CG all to ourselves. Did not see anyone for 3 nights.

I know some great places if you wanted to boondock.

Check out Martineau Recreational Trail Martineau
The trails are about 15 miles away, so you can stay in Walker. There are a few parks there, Acorn is one of them. I have never stayed there but a friend gave it a good review.

If you go off road you will need an OHV sticker to ride on state trails in MN though, so make sure you take care of that.

Check out Gilbert Minn. they have an off road vehicle park there.

We camped at Leech Lake Recreation Area (C O E) Federal Damn campground. Nice campground with laundry, showers and boat docks. You may want to check about the dirt bike riding in the area.
