Northern lights camping

They are pretty wild right here in Yellowknife right now. Parks close mid September and Reid Lake Territorial Park is closed as that is where fire crews are set up. My advice is to be here at Prelude Lake or Fred Henne Territorial Park (or Reid if it opens) the first week of September. Should not go below freezing at night, dark enough to see some great northern lights, and lots of bug free daylight to wander around.

They've been showing over Yukon for the past week. A good show last night around midnight.

Apparently still up there this morning but the sun is too bright to see them!

Aurora forecast

We are in the North Pole area until Tues with the forecast for rain this next week. My wife really wants to see the Northern Lights before we return. If we drive to the Yellowknife area (37 class A with a toad) what are the chances? We need to be back in the lower 48 by the end of the month to take of some business in S.D. Sometime in Sep. and still have to visit family in Montana before.

Anywhere in the far north above the 60th parallel is the best place in the world to see the northern lights, it's not just in the Fairbanks area.

I can also endorse the most spectacular August northern lights show I ever seen was in the Northwest Territories just south of Rae-Edzo-Behchoko headed towards Yellowknife.

The Yellowknife area is also famous and very ideal for truly wicked northern light shows to happen, especially in late winter during March.

Last night Fri-Sat Aug 14-15 around midnight (with minimum light to the north) as skies were clear here in the Fairbanks area, there was some northern light activity....it finally cleared up here after a week of real thick clouds and intermittent cold ****py rainfall with three western nasty fronts to where you would not see any northern light activity over cloud cover since it started getting dark at night here for almost two weeks now.

They.showed up this week. Amazing lights with the meteor showers. Good to see them again.

Have the Northern Lights started showing themselves?

When I was in Fairbanks, I went to the Museum of the North and watched a movie about the aurora. It said that Fairbanks was the best place in the world to watch them, as there's a band that circles the pole and FB is right in it. Of course, they were talking about cities, and I'm sure there are lots of places just as good, they're just not accessible. I found it interesting that once you get above this band it's hard to see them, even though you're further north and closer to the pole.
