It is wonderful to see all the gals post here that do boondock. Yes, it is hard to discern who is male or female by the handles. I try not to stereotype and I hope my question didn't sound as if I was pigeonholing anyone.
rockhillmanor: I did not have any figures; it was just the general impression I found on forums when people were looking for an RV or where to camp.
I do go with my husband; he drives, I navigate. Pretty traditional arrangement. I am usually the more adventurous one who will want to drive on a USFS road or go beyond the pavement. I had to talk him into going to Lunar Crater in Nevada but once there, he enjoyed the quiet and clear bright skies. I think maybe it is because I am drawn to beautiful places because of photography. Although, even if I couldn't bring my gear, I would still go.
Occasionally, we will stay at campgrounds for a shower (Oregon state parks have the best) and get water/dump tanks. But, we like to be by ourselves in a beautiful place where it is quiet and peaceful. I like my nature unpeopled. There is nothing more frustrating than having a shot lined up and then someone decides to get in the frame or have someone ask if you would take their photo. That is why, although we have been to many national and state parks, we prefer the undiscovered places that aren't as well-known such as Lunar Crater, San Rafael Swell, eastern Oregon, etc.
We have seen people in campgrounds who sit around all day, drinking cocktails and then later watching TV. No fault finding here; it is just not our idea of fun. Different strokes. We don't even do that at home as we have acreage and are either walking the woodsy trails in the forestry land in our community or cutting firewood or gardening or laying in the hammock.
So, again, I am glad to know that there are some adventurous gals out there.
Happy trails.
