That's right -- one really bad campground experience can be very persuasive -- it can turn an ordinary camper into a boondocker! We were at a campground in Sequoia National Park (Azalea) which permitted generators between 8 am and 8 pm. You guessed it -- the guy next to us ran his cheap gennie the full 12 hrs each day and refused (rather rudely) to minimize the use or to move it away from our trailer.
We suddenly realized that boondocking was not a bad idea, and we have not looked back!
I haven't had my travel trailer even 365 days yet, and I know where my roots are/were. 2 man tents, a foam mattress and a sleeping bag while mountain biking all over the South West. I've woken up to Honda Genny exhaust stink and CO at 6 am in the morning, heard them run until 12 AM at night with motorcycle riders that have kids playing games on laptops in the toyhauler while the adults sit around the campfire and drink.
I am very aware how obnoxious even a Honda EU2000i can be, when not run in a considerate manner, which is why I've tried to have a footprint that only I can see. It's the main reason I've tried going solar, because unless you are in line of sight, solar doesn't bother much of anyone.
