OBX Cape Hatteras KOA in late June?

Ive never been to the OBX. Looking to go in June and have been looking at the Hatteras KOA. Facility seems fine. Im reading a lot about terrible mosquitoes and how terribly windy it can be in the Hatteras area. Can anyone offer any insights? With a 4.5yr old and a 1 yr old, I dont want the little ones to be pestered 24x7 with the Mozzies if they are that bad and want them to enjoy the beach. I just have no idea what to expect having never been to this area before.
Thank you
Adam

  • Wind from the east no problem with the bugs..from the west, well that's another story..don't worry about it..just take some spray and enjoy..I lived there 10 years and they didn't carry me off..happy camping..
  • I think we are staying on the ocean side of the Hatteras KOA. Hopefully the wind will be enough to keep them reasonable. Not as if we dont have plenty of skeeters here in Indiana however some of the stuff Ive read make it sound like the plague in OBX!
  • Having been going down there for years, my experience has been it's generally too windy for the Skeeters. That being said, there are times when it is relatively calm and they will be out. Overall I get less bug problems there than I do when camping in wooded areas...
  • Where you are planning to stay, mosquitos don't seem to be much of a problem during the day.The ocean breeze really helps. Once the sun starts going down, you might want some good bug spray. I remember attempting a walk at dusk one night that turned out to be no fun due to the bugs.
  • I would not worry too much about that time of year. As long as there is an ocean breeze blowing (which seems like all the time!), there should not be much of a problem with mosquitoes on the beach. At the campground you are probably going to have some mosquitoes or non-see-ems (gnats) during dawn and dusk periods, especially if there is no wind. The only time we have experienced any significant bug problem on the beach is when the wind shifts and comes off the land, and that can bring biting flies.

The bug population is determined by how wet the weather has been - always a few more after a couple days of rain.
