Outer Banks

Hi all,
I am looking to head to the Outer Bank's towards the end of February. Can anyone tell me what to expect for weather at that time of year. Also, any recommended campgrounds.
Thanks, Jason
  • Cold, windy.

    Your choices will be few.

We were there in late March last year. Only a few CG were open. None of the NPS sites or lighthouses.

We stayed at Sands of Time in Avon at Passport America rates. Basic CG, but met our needs.

We saw that Frisco Woods was open, and the Cape Hatteras KOA. The others in the lower island area appeared to be closed. Didn't check on any in the Kitty Hawk, Nags Head area.

    Call and ask.
  • Back about 30 years ago we stayed at the campground on Ocracoke Island. I don't remember it's name back then, but today it's Teeters Campground:

Since then, I've heard good reports and bad reports about this campground. No clue how it stands today. But it's worth checking into. Of course you have to take the ferries to get to the island.

FYI, the tent camping photo in my profile (see to the left) was taken there.
  • In Rodanthe, Camp Hatteras and Cape Hatteras KOA campgrounds are open all year. A mile or so south of these two Ocean Waves Campground is also open.

We stay at the KOA because it is more dog friendly.

As far as weather: It is almost always windy.
The historic average highs for Rodanthe in February range from 52º at the first of the month to 54º at the end. The historic average lows range from 36º to 38º.

    Have a great trip.

  • I second the recommendation of The Black Pelican - good food and decent, if not extensive, wine list. It is in Kitty Hawk, about 50 minutes from Rodanthe. We eat there when we make a day trip to Kitty Hawk.

  • weather will be windy and relatively cold and somewhat unpredictable.
but not nearly as bad as Wisconsin!
  • Are you wanting to stay North or South or both. Manteo?
  • It was snowing and very windy there last weekend...saw it on the Weather Channel.
