Park & Campground Closures

I see several states are closing parks and campgrounds. Has anyone seen any info on U.S. Forrest Service campgrounds? I don't see any notices posted, but park websites aren't very current.

We have our annual trip to Shawnee National Forrest planned for late April.

Closing state parks makes no sense to me.

Does to me actually. All about limiting exposure where people congregate.

The other consideration is that as more folks are sickened and recover from this, people will return to "normal" activities because they are now immune to the disease. There will be a certain degree of herd mentality making others feel pressured, or that it is now ok to go out as well.
Self isolation is going to be a personal decision, and the decision as to when you resume a more normal lifestyle is going to be tough for many to determine.
FWIW Virginia state parks are staying open, at least for now.

If they do return to normal activities after recovering from the virus they can still carry and infect others. At least from what I’m reading.
  • Recreation.gov has been very good about announcing closures of federal parks, though most of that has been over budget stupidity.

If there are wholesale closues, I'm sure it will appear there quicly. While the individual USFS campground may not be on Recreation.gov due to lack of reservable sites, some CG in that national forest is almost certainly on the web site and closure notices for the forest will be posted there.

If all else fails, call the forest headquarters and ask.

Edit: I just checked on some campgrounds in Washington state and they are taking reservations and expect to open on time.

Also, we are full-timers, kind of hard for us to stop going to campgrounds. But we have decided to not attend a campout of a group we belong to this coming weekend, or a state rally the first week of April.

Not over fear of catching the virus, but we looked at the risk factors. Both over 70, high blood pressure, one with Type 2 diabetes. If we are exposed, we have a high risk of developing a very to most severe case.
  • Link to the IDNR (IL dept of natural resources) news article on closures. Sure enough, all IL state parks are closed. No time limit/frame given. I will note on the IDNR website, not much is said, if you can even find it (IDNR website looks like it's from 1995...yet our state spends $billions on this stuff. Ugh). The link below is to the local news.

  • It's not such an easy decision for snowbirds who need to get home.
  • I believe you all need to rethink your travel plans, not only for your own good but for the good of others. This is not they year to travel anywhere, especially Interstate travel. Common sense should tell you to stay home and 'backyard camp'.

Why travel restrictions are being imposed, because people exhibit no common sense. People today want to do what makes them 'feel good' and disregard the welfare of others. My point is... Stay home and stay alive.
  • I was wondering about that. Our first outing this year is Johnson Sauk SP north of Kewanee, IL for Memorial Weekend, then off to Colorado to Cheyenne Mtn. I have not seen closures but will post here if I do see them.

    What states are closing parks?
