If you are coming in from the east (Augusta) I would not use I-285, I take I-20 all the way into downtown and take I-75 north. It's 4 miles shorter to go all the way to I-75, and IMO the traffic on I-285 across the northeast part of the loop is the worst. From the west (Alabama) I-285 is the way to go.
At 2:00pm it won’t be real bad yet, but if you run late it just gets worse. Last time we went thru at 4:00pm, added about an hour to the trip. But it could have, has been lots worse later.
Edit: l001952119 sorry I just realized you aren’t the OP, coming from Texas to Cartersville look at taking US-411 from Gadsden AL over to Cartersville GA. This will keep you out of the Atlanta traffic mess altogether. It also saves about 40 miles
