pigeon forge in early May

Planning a visit to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg area in early May. Several questions:
1. Driving from Myrtle Beach - any suggestions on best route? We have a Class A with a toad.
2. Suggestions on where to stay? We are Passport America and looking at A Walden Creek CG - any opinions?
3. Any "can't miss" or "don't bothers" you would like to share?
Just my husband and I. We like all kinds of music and enjoy fun, but not the "outdoors adventurers" anymore!
4. Any suggestions on local pubs/bars we should enjoy?
Thanks for your help.

  • Foothills RV park and cabins is owned by a friend of mine, very clean, very nice people, small and quiet, clean pool, the very last place on the north side of the road heading out of town toward GB.

    tell Caleb Dar sent ya.
  • We have always stayed in Sevierville. Years ago we stayed at River Plantation and we liked it ok. Last fall before the fire we spent a week at Two Rivers Landing and really liked it. Pull in spots looking over the river we saw eagles almost every day. Big draw for us it the actual national park. The Smokies is the most visited national park so crowds are large and traffic can be annoying. We really enjoyed going back to Two Rivers end of day for some quiet time.

Thanks for correcting me. Sometimes my brain does not tell my fingers what to type correctly. I knew it was Dandridge because we always eat at the Taste of Dandridge restaurant. Their prime rib is excellent.
  • Waldens Creek is easy in/out, trolly stop at park so driving can be left to the driver, has pool. try to park on the creek side.

  • On the best route I would hit I-95 to I-40 and stay on I-40 the whole way in. Once you get thru the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill ramps it is pretty smooth sailing all the way then.

If you want to stay in P.Forge Up the Creek is nice. If you want more of a resort atmosphere and avoid the traffic around P Forge then try Anchor Down in Danville Tn. It is on Douglas Lake. It is about a 35 to 45 min drive to P Forge depending on traffic.
  • Lots to see and do in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. If you don't like the long hikes anymore, stop at the Sugarlands Visitor Center for Great Smoky Mountains National Park just outside Gatlinburg and ask about driving experiences in the park. These include Cades Cove and the Cherokee Orchard/Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail which is accessible off Airport Rd (Traffic light #8) in downtown Gatlinburg.

We have always enjoyed Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge (have been there 4 or 5 times over the years) - - and if you like BBQ, don't miss Bennett's BBQ - - they have a restaurant in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. We also found the "Titanic" exhibit in Pigeon Forge to be worth visiting. Of course there are lots of live shows in Pigeon Forge to take in. Most combine a dinner & show (like the Dixie Stampede).
  • We stayed at Pine Mountain RV Park in Pigeon Forge, nice, clean, quiet, convenient campground.

Be sure to check the dates of this years Synchronous Fireflies In The Smoky Mountains National Park event. This literally shuts down everything in Pigeon Forge and Gatlingburg for a week... It is in the May/June time frame - can't remember the actual dates... There will be peoples everywhere...

This is the only place in the USA where this happens so it is a "Big Deal" event...

The special species fireflies that do this are at the ELKMONT Campground inside the Smoky Mtn Natl Park... We got caught up in this event one year... Certainly is a sight to see for sure...
