Great question! And some fascinating answers so far.
For most of the time we've been RV'ing, I've been an almost compulsive planner.
BUT....
We're entering a new phase of our lives, with retirement becoming a reality. Soon we'll be setting out on a 6-week trip with only a tentative itinerary. We have a couple of reservations at spots that I wouldn't want to miss out on. But, for the most part, we are making a real effort to launch into this with minimal reservations and commitments.
It's HARD! It's really HARD!
What I'm doing is researching the bejeebers out of the places we'll be going, so that we know our options when we get there. My hope is that we'll be able to draw on that knowledge as we make decisions about where to go and what to see. Fortunately, this won't be in peak travel season, so we hope to be able to go where we want and see what we want to see without running into crowds.
But even so, habits die hard. I find myself trending toward precise plans, and then correcting myself by reminding myself that one of the goals is to "go with the flow."
