Please recommend a destination, for this week and next

Hello all :).

I'm at a bit of a loss. We had planned to explore the Klamath River area, but it looks like it is still all smoky. The high sierras might be ok, but Yosemite is a bit farther south than we want, and getting cold. Tired of the coast/redwoods...

We're packing up, ready to head out, but need a destination! Where do you love to go, in northern California? What's beautiful this time of year?

  • Just left Lassen this morning -- Manzanita Campground is lovely! The Bumpass Hell hike is a must-do. Nice fall color in Hat Lake meadows area.
  • Getting cold at night in the Lassen area. 26 at our house this morning. Afternoons are pleasantly sunny, though.

Thanks, you folks, for the great ideas! We are poring over maps...
  • I was going to suggest Lava Beds too. I really enjoyed exploring the lava caves alot! Tulelake area has some history. We stayed at the fairgrounds.
  • If you like geology and caving you could try Lava Beds National Monument in Northern CA. There are some ranger led programs, but mostly you explore the lava tubes on your own. Over 20 developed lava tubes and many undeveloped. It is a uniqe area not many people get to. I went with may parents when I was younger and really enjoyed it, plan on taking my kids when they are older.
  • We like the Redding CA area. Views of Mt Shasta. We stayed at Mountain Gate RV Park and it was nice. Great managers! JGW RV Park gets great reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com
Also Susanville CA more east has Merrill Campground at Eagle Lake and Susanville RV Park. Near Lassen National Forest. 86 miles to Reno.
  • How about the Lake Tahoe area? Take 101 down to Hwy 20 and take that across CA.

We spent some time in Lassen, long ago. Beautiful spot. We went through from east to west, and IIRC there were several campgrounds outside the park, in a long meadow/prairie, that looked appealing, too.

ETA: I've been looking and looking, but I see no maps showing campgrounds in the area I'm thinking of. Maybe it was just that it looked like a nice place for dispersed camping?

And I see there is Ishi Wilderness, just a bit further south. I didn't know it existed!
  • Lassen Volcanic Park is excellent and underused. They have a very nice CG with pull thrus that can handle larger RVs. No hookups of course.
