Point Mallard Park in Decatur, AL

My family and I are going to Madison Al for the Christmas holidays to visit family Madison. We have stayed at the Air and Space Center Park on our last visit but they only have 30amp service. I was having to reset the breaker daily. We have also stayed at Monte Sano which was nice but a climb up the mountain. I am considering Point Mallard Park in Decatur. It sounds nice but their web site has no pictures. Can anyone give me some insight? I will be there from 12/22 until 12/29. I enjoy bike riding if the weather permits.

Thanks for the Help

  • We have lived in Decatur for the last 40 years and been to the Park many times. It is very nice and you will not be disappointed.

Only issue you might have is Decatur traffic/road lay-out is very poor. Huntsville is 25 miles away, and over half the minutes in that trip are just getting out of Decatur. As you know, Madison is half-way between Huntsville and Decatur.

There is a short-cut from Point Mallard Park thru a residential neighborhood that will take you to Highway 67 just 3-4 miles from I-65 and a problem-free trip to Madison. Ask the campground host to show you how to get to 67 by way of Somerville Road. It isn't suitable for a big rig or big trailer, but with a tow vehicle it will be much faster than the route everyone has described to get in.

Presumably you will be coming by way of Chattanooga. You want to avoid Chatta between 3:30 and 6 PM on weekdays, and also avoid I565 between Huntsville and Decatur between 4 and 6. I've sat on both those interstates for longer than I care to remember

Drop me a PM if I can do anything for you while you are here.

If you are looking for a full hook up site 30/50amp its just fine and close enough to Madison. Gravel sites and most will accommodate any size rig. Price is cheap enough. Ad the other poster said get off on MM 340 (Decatur Exit) and its aprrox 5 miles or so and when you see the river bridge you will be crossing get in left lane because you will turn left onto church street @second light. There's a Hardee's and Chevron on that corner ( can't miss it) from there its about 3 miles into the campground entrance. Just stay straight and it dead ends into CG entrance. You will see the golf course on the left.
  • We stay there every year on the way back from Florida to the Midwest in February. Very friendly folks, gravel roads, lots of trees (no satellite TV possible) decent bath facilities. Good Sam Travel Guide ratings are 9/8.5*/8.5.
The CG host said the best way to get there is to exit I-65 at MM 340, go west on 20/alt 72 to 31 south to Church Street (1st or 2nd stoplight past the river I think), turn left to the campground the entrance of which is past the campground proper. If you miss Church take the next left.
