Pokagon State Park in Indiana campground questions

Pokogon SP used to be our favorite winter park in which to camp for about 5 years or so. That was 25-30 yrs ago. But even then, when campers were generally smaller and campgrounds less fancy, Pokogon stood out as a great state park. During the winter months, they did not have all the loops plowed so site selection was limited but all sites were were large enough by multiples to accommodate our 38' MH. The sites used in the winter had concrete pads with W/E though the water was turned off in the winter. Roads were paved and excellent. Though we were often the only campers in the park, I did not observe any areas that would have been a noise or traffic problem. Before you get to the campground portion of the park, there are the day areas, a nice lodge/hotel with an excellent restaurant and, in the winter, an excellent iced toboggan run and more but none should create undue noise or traffic for the campground. After we went FT 21 yrs ago, we have not returned to any of the IN State Parks but I don't recall reading that any have suffered maintenance issues etc since we enjoyed them. I'm sure others with more recent experience will update you as well.

We've been to Pokagon a few times and think there are no bad spots anywhere. Some are in trees, some in full sun. If I remember, there is no water at the sites. It's a shared spigot, so you'll need to run a hose, fill your tank and then unhook it, or use the fill station.

No dumps on site either (as is common in Indiana). You'll need to use the dump station. So if you have a blue tote, you'll find it priceless, unless you don't mind breaking camp to transport your camper to the dump station.

Then... make your reservation for that site!

Living in Southern Indian we have camped at or visited every state park except Pokagon and the Dunes, both long drives for us 5 hours+. We have 100 gallons of fresh on board so we can just fill it up on the way in if we are low. We are only staying a few days during the week so our 45 gallon black water tank should be fine. If we take showers in the bath house and don't do laundry the gray water tank will also survive. Most of the State Parks in Southern Indiana (WPA projects) have upgraded to 30amp and water. Very few have 50amp or sewage. We have stayed at state parks where our camp site was the direct path/trail to the pool or the playground equipment and kids are constantly walking withing feet of your RV. I know at Spring Mill most stites we have a hard time getting level with any more than one tire still on the ground. last fall I bet the left front was a foot off the ground.

Pokagon is fairly hilly and there aren't many sites that I would call level. They were also hit very hard by the Emerald Ash Borer and many many trees were removed a couple years ago. The park is still a great park. Another great park that is convenient to Auburn is Chain O Lakes and the sites are much flatter. I believe both parks are 15 or 30 amp. I don't believe 50 amp is available unless they were upgraded recently.
