Poultry ban

I doubt there are very many Canadians still down south. BUT if you plan on buying any poultry before you return to Canada it will be confiscated. I know this as they took over $25 worth of Costco chicken breasts from me yesterday. All of this due to an outbreak of avian flu in US chickens. At first it was only when you passed through a few states. Now it is a lot of the crossings. Eggs, turkey and chicken are affected. Fresh or frozen. I was told that cooked is OK . I am now stuck with paying ridiculous prices to support the protectionist Chicken Marketing Boards!

  • When we passed through customs we were asked if we had any chicken.
I said we had some frozen and were informed of the ban.
We were told to pull over to an area and check what state it came from.
All of ours was from California so we were allowed to bring it in.

The CFIA (posted above) states California is included.

So did you pass thru customs prior to April 14 (date on notice) OR somebody didn't get the 'memo' :H
  • Crossed on April 13 at Pacific crossing ?Since the pullover area was congested with RV's, the agent asked me to go back and get my eggs. So I did this at the booth and handed them over very delicately :)
  • When we crossed at Peace Arch on April 15 we had frozen chicken from Arizona as well as eggs from the same state. We phoned prior to crossing to check to see if we could bring chicken in from Arizona, we were told that we could. When we reached the border we asked and explained what we were told, we still lost the chicken and eggs the reason being was that we had travelled through states where the ban was in effect. I thought that they might error on the side of caution so I wasn't terrible surprised.
  • The US took it off me, crossing over from Mexico last month. It was frozen Cordon Bleus from Tyson, a US company. Only ever seen those in Mexico and they are the best ones I have ever tasted. Annoying.
  • Chicken from Mexico has NEVER been allowed. Once a product leaves the USA they consider it foreign. Go figure!
