Recommendations for Texas state parks?

We have recently acquired a TT and are looking forward to using it for weekend trips. Would like to hear recommendations for state parks and/or other camping sites in the north Texas area that we might visit. We currently have reservations for Bonham State Park next week (Dec 13-15).

  • Don't forget all the Corps of Engineers parks at Texoma,Lakke O the Pines,Lake Benbrook, Lavon.
Bob Sandlin SP,Atlanta SP are both nice.be careful at Daingerfield if you have big trailer as even after the renovation most sites are small.
  • Best in Texas imho is Palo Duro, and Caprock Canyon.

I live fairly near Cedar Hill State Park, and while nice, it is very crowded on the weekend because of the location near DFW.

From DFW area, Cleburne is also nice, as is Dinosaur Valley.

If anybody has been to Mission Tejas, pm me and let me know what it was like please. (we like private camping and I hear it is not crowded EVER there)
  • Ray Roberts State Park-Johnson Branch Unit and Lake Mineral Wells State Park are two that are close. Lake Mineral Wells is our favorite. Get the official state parks book. It has an overview of each park and is good way to see what each park has to offer.
  • Within a 2 hour drive of Dallas:
Tyler State Park, Lake Tawakoni State Park, Lake Ray Roberts State Park, Cedar Hill State Park, Glen Rose State Park, Cooper Lake State Park.
I haven't explored the area around Lake Ray Roberts so not sure how much is there to visit, but the park is nice. All of the other parks are nice but also have nice areas around to visit. Except for Cedar Hill, think small town and cool Mom & Pop stores.
    3-5 hours from Dallas:
Fort Griffin State Historic Site. Haven't been in 2 years since they did some updates, but it is a neat historical site. They were supposed to update the campsites and then my DH changed his dove lease to a different area. Hope to make it there after DD graduates and my time constraints change.
Copper Breaks State Park. Again neat historic campground.
We also enjoyed McKinney Falls State Park in Austin. It is in the middle of Austin, so we really used it as a hotel for sightseeing.
As you can tell, I'm a state park geek. We buy the state park pass and get our money's worth. And I love to visit the areas so I'm not necessarily looking to hike and bike all the time. We enjoy just sitting around the campsite and chilling out. And yes, I'm the type to stay inside sometimes and watch tv and do my camping crafts. My DH uses the campsite as homebase during hunting season so we spend quite a few winter weekends out.
We've spent several summer vacations down at Galveston Island State Park, but it's really starting to wear waiting for them to rebuild after it got wrecked a few years ago.
    Enjoy your new adventures!
  • You have a lot to choose from in that area. Dangerfield, Cado Lake are a couple of my favs, also Eisenhower and Cooper lake are nice.
  • Getting into Bonham's camping area is a little tricky. From the campground road to the sites is a fairly steep drop. I made it in there OK with the 30' fifth wheel I used to have but the one I have now would be kind of iffy.

Since you are close to Denton take a look at Hickory Creek COE park. Great campsites right on Lake Lewisville. If you look at my photolink you'll find lots of north TX state parks and pictures of individual campsites that we liked.

You might also want to look at the North Texas Camping Association website on Yahoo groups. Nice group of people that do monthly campouts.
  • In the North Texas area, we enjoyed visiting Possum Kingdom State Park. Don't know what it's like after that fire a few years back.

Now if you want to go out west to the Panhandle (which some folks call West Texas), I'd recommend Palo Duro Canyon SP and Caprock Canyon SP, in that order.

I'd stay away from both in the summertime unless you're taking an overnighter on the way to someplace cooler.
  • Palo Duro State Park is one of the best state parks that we have ever been to.

    Outstanding.
