Recommendations in Black Hills?

Stay down near HillCity and head west through Custer. Hill City is more centrally located and close to all attractions. Deadwood is nice, but is a bit more adult oriented with the bars and such.

We really like Horsethief Campground located off of Needles Hwy.

Custer looks like 1-1.5hrs from Deadwood, but close to Rushmore. I think that would work. What about Whispering Pines? Looks like it's roughly right in between Deadwood and Mt Rushmore.

The only issue we had with camping at Custer Park was it was a long way from everything.

Still, a great place to stay.

Elk horn ridge rv park is about 5 min from deadwood and is a full service rv resort. We camped at bluebell also and it's a nice park. I personally would choose Custer state park but if just stopping by on the way to Yellowstone Elkhorn is in a ideal spot.

Definitely the park. We were there 3 weeks ago and I stayed 6 nights for 165 bucks at Blue Bell Campground. That campground is a five min drive to Wind Cave NP, and not too far to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.

If you have kids, the KOA just west of Rushmore is the best

thanks for the great advice so far. i should've mentioned, shower facilities not necessary, as we use ours in the TT. also electric only works as well. no kids, so don't need those kinds of amenities. Just myself, wife and 2 dogs. dogs will generally hike with us, so having dog-friendly trails and such would be preferred.

We just spent a week in Custer SP. The Black Hills were a surprise to us...we thought it would be a 2-3 day stopover. Instead, we spent a week and wanted more. So I would second the opinion to go into the SP. However, it is a pretty good drive from Deadwood.

Yes, this is a stones throw across the road from Fish n Fry. Good store, good eating on site, very nice private showers and restrooms, great fuel station, for big rigs too. If the OP has kids, nothing there for them.

If OP wants to spend his two day time in Deadwood, and close by scenic areas, he would not want to be in Custer SP.

I have to put a plug in for Steel Wheel CG just outside Deadwood. Nestled against the woods, nice level sites and new laundry, good general store, gas etc. Closer to DW than Custer if that makes a difference. They are a PPA park.
