Redwood Highway this August

Hello everyone,

We recently upgraded our 19' Amerilite to a 26' Shadow Cruiser and we are are starting to plan our summer RV trip. I'm pretty sure we are settled on somewhere along the Redwood Highway but I have a few questions I hoped you all could help me with:
1) there seems to be a lot of length restrictions in the campgrounds and when they state a limit I assume it includes the tongue length as well? Or is it just box length?

2) would we be best served to stay in multiple parks, or just find a nice basecamp and work from there?

3) Patricks Point looks great, anyone been there before?

Thanks for any help. FYI , we will be traveling from SLC and have 9 total days (probably 2 to get there and 2 to get home), and traveling with kids from 3-15.

Chris

  • Thanks for the info guys. There seems to be quite a few camground around that area.

Also the capsite photos site makes life a little easier.
  • If you can't get into a campground, there are some well-located RV parks near the mouth of the Klamath River -- easy drive to Prairie Creek and the other redwood parks in the area. We liked Kamp Klamath -- not everyone does. It is kind of funky and run-down and "homelike." (I guess that tells you something about my home, doesn't it?) They have a barbecue on the weekends with really good live music. The sites are large and grassy. No traffic noise, which is nice. Try to get a site under the trees, rather than on the big open lot -- talk to the park managers before you book a site. Check out the Klamath entries on rvparkreviews.com -- there are several good choices.

From the bluff near the park, you can usually see whales feeding along the beach -- this is a "resident" pod that does not migrate from Alaska to Mexico -- very unusual.
  • Went to Patrick's Point a few years back with a 22' TT and F150. We found that like stated above most spots are short and have 90deg back in angles. We were there in Sept and the south loop was closed. We stayed at the north loop. There are some sites that are longer but are adjacent to the day use parking lot. Not a really nice view. PP is a really nice place with a great beach and trails.

Here's a link to Campsitephotos showing real photo's of the camping sites at Patricks Point, Ca. Save the link for future reference.
  • We've taken that trip a few times in the past, and taken an occasional day trip when in the area. My personal suggestion is to stay in one of the private campgrounds on the 101. There are plenty. Then tour the side road of the Redwood Highway in the car. It's two lane with many curves, although none are really tight. But there are many roadside scenic spots where parking could be a problem, especially if there is a crowd. Places like the drive thru tree, the Mystery garden, the Redwood travel trailer, and dozens of craft shops make it a fun tour.
    Happy Trails.
  • When viewing space lengths at Patricks point, you will notice at reserve America many of the listed lengths indicate a maximum 24 feet. My experience there is that the layout of the roads and spaces are not conducive for maneuvering the big boys out there - 30 feet plus. My 26 ft 5er fits fine but some of the spaces are perpendicular to the narrow access road and backing in is sometimes tricky.

We will stay a couple of days at Patricks point, then maybe move north and stay at Prairie creek for a couple of days. And then keep that up heading north.

The topic of campground length always brings up a lot of interesting comments. My experience has been if you can get it into the site, it fits regardless of a published length limit. If not, there almost always is a nearby campground with longer sites or an RV park nearby that can accommodate 60 or 70 foot long rigs. In some cases whether you fit is how well you do at parking. I would not even begin to concern myself until over 30 feet for the TT. Sometimes it is easier to find a place you like and just use it as a base of operations. The trees and coast are well worth the trip.
