RGV

Good to hear all the nice comments about the RGV. We'll be spending our first winter there next season. We'll be working at VIP La Feria. Maybe I'll get some new boots!

RGV is crowded around McAllen...

east or west ..not so much

October is Find with space... but by December.. it might not be so easy..
I spent the past 2 winters in Mission, Texas and will return next fall.

if you plan to stay a month or more.. ASK at campground /RV resort..
for first time Winter Texan discount.... for some 30% plus discount..

We are experiencing the RGV for the first time. Formerly went to the Hill Country. Quite a difference. Hill Country which is what many perceive to be "real Texas" with cowboys, cattle, barbecue and open spaces. RGV is crowded,commercial, not very scenic but the weather is warmer, parks are more friendly more like an American version of Mexico. Both have their advantages. The RGV is a bit harder for us to get used to.

RGV Rio Grande Valley the area roughly starts West of Mission next to McAllen in Texas and runs along the Rio Grande that forms the border between the United States and Mexico, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

To the OP: You will find almost no boondocking areas, although there are places on the beach at Padre Island. Not where I would want to spend the Winter. It will be very hot in September and October with relief coming in late November. You may be surprised at what you find in the RGV (Rio Grande Valley of Texas) For example; we must have 20-30 Walmarts, which surprises some folks. Also, it not a "Valley" in the usual sense. Just a desolate dirty strip of land along the Rio Grande River that is far enough south to be somewhat warm in the Winter. Come on down.

Very little federal land in TX and not much state land either. 4.2 percent public and the rest private. Some around the various lakes but no big swaths like in NM, AZ, CA, etc. Some other states with similar numbers.

With that question I believe you might be in for a rude awakening when you get there.

When it comes to being a Winter Texan I think a good motto to live by would be "No shirt, no shoes - no problem. No money, problem."

Nothing like Q for free, that we've heard of in the past 12 winters. Might look at Gate Guarding and get a spot and get "paid", but you have to be checked out and are located far off the beaten path and not in the RGV.
