Roan Mountain State Park

I had an old thread about this park before when I was thinking of going and got great info.

I booked it.
they had it on TN reservation system.

since I have never been, can anyone tell me about the park in general.
I googled for campsite pics etc. but couldn't find anything good to show me this cg.

Site 12. It showed it was near the little river.

Anyone know what site 12 looks like etc. and camped in that area?
It looks like the pool is down the road a bit and across the stree from the cg. It doesn't seem far? Is it? I think I could bike it?

thanks alot for any info on it.
  • It is about the prettiest state park there is.
We live just on the other side of Roan Mountain in Nc, and drive through it lots of times.
Prior to us snow birding, we used to cross country ski all through it and including the camp ground.
The pool is on the same side of the park road that the camp ground is on.
I don't think the camp sites would be good for a large rig.
If you can get a site on the creek you'll love it.
you can walk to the pool from the camp ground.
If you like hiking, drive up to the top of Carvers Gap on Roan Mtn and hike on the AT, or hike out to Roan high Bluff, (6000 feet)

My wife said to tell you that we live on the morning side of the mountain and the camp ground is on the twi-light of the hill !

  • the twilight side. I like that :)

    thanks for that good info.
explains the pool to me and within walking distance is wonderful. I have a 7 year old daughter so that makes it very easy for us.

Site 12 showed the water and it said 53 ft in length, 14 ft wide, with a 10 x 10 living area. Our rig is 32 ft fifth wheel. I hope we are ok with that.

I was a little leary of state parks having those more narrow roads with trees on every curve :)
  • We camped there two years ago in March. Only the loop near the check in station was open and we were the only ones there. We were in either 12, 14, or 16, can't remember which. It was absolutely beautiful, peaceful and quiet - one of our favorite parks ever (though it was empty, which could be a factor). We didn't know there was a swimming pool, we spent our time wandering along the stream. DH actually caught a fish in it. Idyllic is the best word.

If the campground is crowded, you will have a different experience. The sites on that side were easy to back into, angled well, but you have to go around the loop to get there and again, if it is crowded and people have their stuff/cars/ rigs all over the place, it may be a little more difficult. the road itself is wide enough. You do have a small site directly across from you and if their rig/truck combo doesn't fit into their site, it will make entering yours a little more difficult. But I am trying to paint a worse case scenario.

    It's a beautiful place.

thank you very much for that great review. that gives me a great idea of this cg.

I ''think'' TN might be giong back to school earlier than me. We are like Aug. 27 here. When I booked, alot of spots were available so I think maybe many are already heading back to school soon?? not sure. but so many sites were open and it surprised me. kind of thought I would have to fight to get a spot. probably will get full over the weekend. I arrive on a Tues. I hope I will be good to get in and set up and not worry :)

    wonderful info. I appreciate it!
  • I wanted to say thanks to you guys.

we went to Roan Mt State Park for 5 days.

    WONDERFUL!!

it was packed but it was a blast. nice people, friendly staff, great programs for a park for the kids, wonderful river in my backyard, good fishing, great hiking, deer everywhere and kinda tame (site 12 was great!), pool with slide and diving boards ($2 per person for campers). place was clean. lot of kids and dogs and no one was loud :) nice state park. will definitely go again.

On the heresay---our neighbor said he was friends iwth the camp host. camp host told him all sites were to be paved and the cg 'kinda' revamped a bit. SWEET if it happens.

Roan Mt State Park campground did not disappoint. it was fun!

Does the reservation site have photos of each site. I know the ELKMONT camp reservation place in the SMOKY MTN Natl Park in TN has at least four to five photos of each site...

  • Yes there are pics and descriptions/lengths of campsites on the TN reservation system. when you go onto the TN state park, start your reservation dates, then a cg map pops up and when you cursor over the site #, a pic pops up of the site.
you can see what they look like.
  • I wish they had that many photos for the sites at Cades Cove.
  • oh boy I sure agree. I wish many places had full pics and descriptions of the sites. would be wonderful.
