Rock Chips in the RGV

I have had my windshield repaired twice by the $15 Windshield Repair Business. located on BUS 83 in Weslaco just east of the Flea Market. They did a good job.

Also had my windshield replaced twice by Weslaco Glass Company located about 2 miles east of the Donwes Flea Market on Bus 83 in Weslaco. They also did a good job.

I had a mobile windshield repair guy over in the Phoenix area to repair a stone chip and he said Phoenix was the worst for stone chips and Las Vegas was second in the nation. I don't imagine this was backed by stats but working for a large national company they might know where they make most of their money.

Reasons?

It is dry and windy, pretty big stuff can get blown into the traffic lanes.

Texas does a thing with driving on shoulders to enable overtaking, and this throw a lot of trash from the shoulder into the road.

It is not just the RGV. Houston/Harris County is just as bad for getting windshields hit, my experience.

We actually made a game of counting cracked windshields in parking lots, you are correct the RGV is still the worst area we have ever seen for cracked windshields.

Texas safety inspection does not require repair of a cracked windshield. Only if it obstructs the driver's vision.

So many folks do not repair cracks until the windshield either falls out or becomes too messed up to see thru.

I have used them in the past and they are so good you really can't see the chip. Much cheaper than a window replacement.

When we were in the upper valley I counted 1 in 4 cars had a cracked windshield while waiting at a mall. If you have a tall truck you might get lucky, if you have a short car then maybe not so much. We had a car and had rock hits all the time. They were small and did no damage.

Seems to me that the quality of the roads are good, just not the cleanest. Also the cars and trucks that are using them could do much better as far as mud flaps and tires that fit inside the wheel wells.

I guess it's legal to drive with a crack windshield as long as it's not in your sight line in Texas. Reason why you see so many I think.

I have been lucky, only 2 in the past 11 seasons, one was this Winter.
