By far the best CGs are the Canadian PPs & Alaskan state recreation parks.
Unfortunately at 44' sites able to accommodate you are few. We are just under 36'LOA and the trick was to arrive early to get a spot long enough before someone with a truck camper or a class C snagged one of the few long sites.
The good news is that many people are doing Alaska in a rush & don't head for a CG till late in the day.
The private CGs are much like those found anywhere else. They lack the atmosphere of camping The North. They will always find somewhere to cram you in.
Reservations will only be needed at places like Fairbanks & perhaps Denali. The rest wing it only making reservations maybe a day or so out when you have an idea of where you will be.
