I stayed a bit further away from the park than most would want to. I was in Custer State Park, dry camping - my favorite.
This led to a long drive to the park - through 4 tunnels on highway 16, so you get a great view from each tunnel, they are bored out of the mountain in a straight line to the monument. Be sure to get a look at them if you have time.
Also just after leaving the Rushmore monument parking lot, you can turn to the left, go about 1/4 mile, and get a side shot of Washington.
