Check your map before you take the advice of some of these as they are way out of your way. If you're going from Carmel up I-5 you will not pass through Sacramento unless you go out of your way. You'll take 505 up to I-5. This takes you right by the RV park at Midway Road in Vacaville as well as the one in Dunnigan. Both decent places for a quick overnight stay.
It adds 40 miles to the trip, but that may be a viable route if you have to pass through the bay area during rush hour. Otherwise from Carmel you get on 101 to 680 to 80 to 505 to 5.
