Are you coming from the north or south..or east?
We've stayed in Santa Rosa at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds (it honors many types of camping passes, is reasonable for the area, and has hookups) and also Napa Valley Expo. Both are very easy to get to from the north or east. Never came in from the south. Hwy 37 from I-80 at Vallejo is a easy drive to Napa or continue on 37 to 101 and north to Santa Rosa.
We took an excellent small van all-day tour of the city and Sausalito. We drove our car to the Larkspur Landing ferry at 101/580 and picked up the ferry from there - no driving into the city. The ferry is a short pleasant ride across the bay past Alcatraz. It let us off at the Ferry Building by Fisherman's Wharf and the tour van was waiting for us. At the end of the day tour we reversed to get back to our car. Even our daughter, who lives in the city, was very impressed with the tour. We had plenty of time out of the van for walking around the Golden Gate Bridge and the Japanese Garden and other landmarks. We also had lunch in Sausalito by riding across the bridge.
