Santa Barbara CA wildfires force 4000 - 6000 campers to flee

The fire broke out about Monday afternoon in Los Padres National Forest about 15 miles north of Santa Barbara, and hours later had grown to 1,000 acres — or 1.5 square miles — amid winds of about 20 mph, U.S. Forest Service officials said. It was 5 percent contained.

Paradise Road and the many campgrounds along it were closed, forcing between 4,000 and 6,000 of campers, many already clearing out at the end of the holiday weekend, to evacuate, officials said.

  • This report on inciweb.org seems the most current and accurate. The site gets heavy use and takes time to load:

Note that the number of "evacuees", whether residents, campers, other, is estimated at 2000-3000 by the sheriff's department, and frankly, with that big a discrepancy in the estimate, who knows?

The fire area is sparsely populated, and there are few "campgrounds". The Los Padres NF website mentions nothing (when I looked an hour or so ago, anyway) except the closure of Paradise Road.

News reports are notoriously inaccurate; most of the "reporters" shoot from the hip with whatever baloney they're fed, then use subsequent reports to backtrack and "correct" previously-given information.

It's going to be long, tough, destructive fire season in California.:(
  • It's NEVER a good way to end up a camping trip, being chased away by fire. We were forced out of St Mary Campground in Glacier National Park a few years back. The smoke had been getting worse and worse for the last couple of days so we weren't really wanting to stay around any longer anyway but other area campgrounds filled up quickly from folks moving.

Well there they go again... it was 4000 to 6000 residents and campers. Mostly residents. It's too bad the news reporters get excited and give out the wrong information.

It's a gaff every news agency has committed. Still, we send up our prayers for these folks.
