Savannah, GA

It's that time of year (for us) to start making plans for next summer's vacation.

A couple year's ago, we traveled to Charleston, Sc and loved it. We've been tossing Savannah, Ga around as a destination. Never been there but I've been told that it's a "must". Is there anyone with local experience that can give me a little run-down on things to see/do? We love the history; ie. civil war stuff, plantations, etc.

Also thinking about staying at Skidaway Island State Park. We prefer state parks over private CG's.

Thanks.

Going to be a bit buggy, but anytime in the summer will be bugs below North Carolina, especially around the coast. Great place to see history and enjoy some pretty good food.

Double ditto. November through March is the best time to see Savannah: mild temps and no bugs, ticks, etc. In our opinion, December is the best time to see Savannah with its holiday light shows and decorations such as the parade of boats.

For summer we stay in the mountains which have more comfortable temps and fewer gnats and mosquitoes than the coasts.

I can certainly appreciate your point of view. However, that will have to wait 'till we retire. Right now, my DW is a teacher and summers is all we have. Coming from up north we welcome the heat for a couple of weeks. Besides, I don't think I could get the RV out of the back yard right now with all the snow. lol)
  • I spent one full day in Savannah this past January as a stopover a break on my drive to Key West. Weather was beautiful as was the whole downtown area. Lots of history as well as fun bars and restaurants. I have never been there prior to this, and it is on my list of places to return soon.

For summer we stay in the mountains which have more comfortable temps and fewer gnats and mosquitoes than the coasts. There are a number of historic cities and towns in the mountains that are enjoyable. Just a quick thought brings up two such examples:
-Lexington, VA with its two universities dating to before the Civil War; Goshen Pass and Natural Bridge are nearby.

-Asheville, NC with the Biltmore mansion, arts community, local farms, whitewater rafting, and AT activities
  • We did Savanna last spring, the neighborhood area around Paula Dean's restaurant is a nice place to spend an evening (Her Rest. is a bit pricy, and food is not that good, if you message me I'll give you the low down if you want). Good Luck and Happy Camping !!
