As far as cell coverage, Verizon seems to be the best bet.
And the small towns keep voting down any stores such as Walmart.
We have service from AT+T & Sprint currently but truth be known I'm perfectly fine being disconnected for a bit.
I think I understand why many small towns are leery of WMs and other big box stores....they can be rather soul sucking. NYC' commercial landscape has become awashed in various chain stores and it's driven too many mom and pop outfits out of business:(. - NYCgrrlExplorer

If you say what you will be driving/towing, we can better suggest. I used to love traveling the NYS Parkways, but they will not accommodate how we travel these days.

Not towing anything and haven't made my car reservation yet.....prolly will be a Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey.
We'll be tent camping on the islands and will need to rent boats at each lake so they won't be towed either:).
Living in Manhattan currently and since it's not car friendly we generally rent a car when we need one.
The 1930's era parkways in this region aren't RV friendly for the most part but sure are pretty; one of my favs is the Merrit. - mboppExplorerAs far as cell coverage, Verizon seems to be the best bet.

I'd pick up NY 28 as far south as possible; a pretty road through the Catskills as well as in the Adirondacks. Lots of small towns, lots of twists & turns, and mostly 2 lane. You wouldn't want to pull a large trailer, but a fun drive. If you need a walmart, check the larger cities such as Oneonta. As mbopp says, you won't find any in the Adirondacks...
Interesting about the lack of WM; sounds just like home to me cuz there are none in NYC either, LOL.
Loving the fact that cell phone use will be limited as well but not sure if I could do that day in, day out, for a year.
Thanks to each and everyone of you for giving insight and directions:c. - vermilyeExplorerI'd pick up NY 28 as far south as possible; a pretty road through the Catskills as well as in the Adirondacks. - mboppExplorerThere are no Walmarts or similar stores in the Tupper - Saranac - Lake Placid area. Shaheen's market in Tupper isn't bad for groceries, but it's no supermarket.
- GeoBoyExplorerTake I-87 north to the Warrensburg exit 23, then take Rt. 28 to Indian Lake, then take Rt. 30 north to Tupper Lake and then take Rt. 3 onto Saranac Lake. Enjoy your ride it is a nice trip.
