Skidaway Island State Park in February?

We are planning to stay for a week at Skidaway Island State Park (Savanna Ga.) in mid February. We always say we would like to visit Savanna when we pass by going to Florida. Looks like the daytime avg. temp is the lower 60’s.

Anyone have suggestions / experience staying at Skidaway and visiting Savanna in February?

  • Said this before... Bears repeating:

"In Atlanta, they ask what business you're in. In Macon, they ask what church you go to. In Augusta, they ask what's your mother's family name... In Savannah, they ask, 'What would you like to drink, Shugah?'"

    MY kinda place! :B
  • Once more suggestion... stop in Charleston on the way back north. I love both those cities!
  • Thanks everyone for the great information. Planning on 5 days to visit Savanna, Hilton Head, Wormsloe Historic Site, Tybee island, Beauford and Hunting Island.

We stayed at Fort Clinch last year during the first week of February and lucked out with several days in the 70's. Made the mistake this year not to make reservations early.
  • We do it all the time on our way down to Florida. Savannah is GORGEOUS in February. I would suggest you bring a light and medium jacket though, because it can get chilly at night sometimes. Last year we were a little chilly and bundled up but it was still a little brisk. Usually we are comfortable with a lighter jacket though.

During the day it is usually quite comfortable with jeans and a t-shirt. If you are there and have never been, go to the Breakfast Club on Tybee Island one morning. It is an AMAZING breakfast spot a block from the beach. If you like pizza, Vinnie Van Go-Go's is a popular spot. They are cash only and right in the middle of downtown Savannah.

My suggestion is to try to bring some bikes with you. The city is gorgeous and there is a LOT to see.
  • We recommend visiting Wormsloe Historic Site that is very close by. We loved our visit.
  • Not sure if the sand gnats reach up to skidaway, but down near Brunswick they can be bad at that time of year. We are originally from Georgia...February can be a toss up. If I tell you to take a windbreaker, you might need a goose down coat or a bikini...You can wear long johns at Christmas this year and shorts next year... just depends...be prepared...
  • It can be very pleasant with mild temperatures requiring no coat in the daytime and just a light cover at night or it can be bitter cold with temperatures around freezing, even below, with a raw wind.
  • We have never stayed there during February, but have gone to Hunting Island, which is about 50 miles north. Take a light jacket, since you may have to deal with a COLD wind coming off the water. The night-time temps can get quiet cool and if a cold front comes through, it can be downright cold (down around the freezing mark), so make sure you have some propane and especially a good heater.

If you happen to be there during a warm time, temps can be in the high 60s and low 70s, which can feel pretty nice.

Mosquitoes shouldn't be too bad during that time, but make sure you have some bug spray, just in case. My son was there camping for a couple of days the first week of January and said the skeeters were pretty bad, especially for the winter.

A good campfire in the evenings should be very welcome.

Have fun, we like that campground a lot and enjoy a trip into Savannah for seeing some sites and on occasion, grabbing some food at one of the local eateries.
