South East States Camping & Visiting must sees

Hello,

Will be traveling from Buffalo, NY down to the Florida Keys this summer. Taking about 6 weeks total. About a week planned in Orlando to visit Disney World (first time and camping at the Disney Campground) and another week in Atlanta to visit Family. Any good campgrounds suggested near Atlanta?

Would like recommendations for camp groups for a 35 ft travel trailer (with a dog and two teenagers) in North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

We love our National Parks and Historic places.

Any MUST SEE's in these four states? What isn't worth the hype? Good campsites?

any suggestions is appreciated.

THANK YOU!!

Although incrediblye beautiful, I would not recommend towing a 35 foot trailer on the Blue Ridge.

  • If you go down or up the I95 corridor I would strongly encourage you to stop in St Augustine, Savannah and Charleston. All three are very old southern cities and beautiful. They are very easy to access off I95, lots of history, lots of charm, lots of good food.

If you have the time, take a circuitous trip down. Come down(or up) I81 and visit the Smokies and the beauty of that area. Spend some time going down the Gulf coast of Florida. Lots of beautiful cities and towns, great beaches, laid back atmosphere in western Florida. Come back up (or down) I95 and see the Atlantic coast of Florida and catch the cities that I mentioned.

We go down I95 every February to get to the Gulf coast of Florida and we always stop in Charleston and Savannah, usually stop in St Augustine too. We love those cities!

James Island County Park in Charleston is GORGEOUS and has tons of amenities. Great walking trails, playgrounds, dog park, water park, etc. Good access to the city, good access to Folly Beach as well. If you go to Charleston, try to find time to go to Patriot's Point in Mt Pleasant. Its a military museum based on the USS Yorktown carrier, a destroyer, a submarine and a Vietnam artillery fire base. Awesome experience.

I've never stayed there, but Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah is often mentioned and people love it. We usually just stay for a couple nights and spend our time in the city, so we just pick a local campground that has vacancies.

We LOVE North Beach in St. Augustine. Its a little spit of land between the Tolamato River and the Atlantic Ocean. Easy access to the beach, easy access to St Augustine as well.

Not sure where you are staying while at Disney. Lots of people stay at Fort Wilderness. We went about 12 years ago and stayed at Tropical Palms and loved it. It is in Kissimmee right near Old Town, which was a really cool outdoor shopping area with good restaurants and bars. It was a pretty easy drive to Disney from there, they may have even had a shuttle as well.

Sounds like a really fun trip, enjoy!!!

First off - look for water - Beach? From Rehoboth Beach to Daytona many just depends on the one that is near your stop at the end of the Day.

Washington DC Museums - been here for 50 years and it never gets old - went a couple weeks ago with one of the Granddaughters, loved it.

Williamsburg - is a good history lesson.

Charlottesville, University of Virginia - might just look it over.

So many Lakes and the mountains of the Carolinas are never a disappointment. Biltmore - Lake Toxaway/Cashiers area - You have Atlanta Covered - then both Coasts of Florida, they are just so different.

Just going over this you might want to try to stretch the time off as there is Never Enough TIME.

    Best of Luck,
  • In Atlanta, Stone Mountain, World of Coke, Aquarium and lots of historical sites. Just be prepared for lots and lots of traffic.
  • Are you moseying around or just looking for quick stops as you pass through on your way to Micky World? A lot depends on your route.

Along I95, Outer Banks, Charleston, Savannah.

Along I81, Smokies, Blue Ridge (I've not driven it with trailer in tow), Shenandoah Valley and the National Park.

You'd have to narrow things down some to get CG recommendations.
  • Duckett Mill COE on lake Lanier just outside Atlanta is a beautiful place. We really liked it and will return again this spring.

Stone Mountain was also a place we liked and glad we went.

Vogel State Park as mentioned in a previous post is very nice also.

We also enjoyed a stop In Helen Georgia touristy but it was fun for a day trip.
  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or really any of the mountains in that area, or North Georgia. Vogel State Park is awesome.

Rainbow River in Donnellon Fl, is a beautiful spring fed River that is crystal clear, and 75 degrees year round. Disney will be HOT in the summer, and a paddle down the river will be cool and relaxing.
