South West Weather

We are planning on lesving fot Tx, Nm, and Az by the end of Dec. Will be staying in Waco Tx, Tucson Az, and Quartzsite Az until First of May. We are wondering what the temps etc will be during this time.
For Six years have been in Fl. and want to try something new.

  • Historical averages are a good starting place BUT the year to year variations can make a BIG difference. The forecasts is 3-5 degrees colder than normal for Waco, TX.

I agree with the above completely.

Looking at the Two-class Monthly & Seasonal Climate Outlook for this winter (2015/2016), and bearing in mind the solidly in place El Nino, we are bracing for a MUCH colder deep south from southern Arizona (roughly -111.08 and east) all the way to the entire (most?) Florida peninsula, down to roughly Orlando and perhaps even Miami. Also, precipitation probabilities (rain, freezing rain) over average are very, very high for December, January, February, and early March for the regions of: southern Cali (much more rains), southern Arizona (rains strongly above average), southern Texas (rains and freezing rains above average), the entire Gulf Coast area (strong probability of above average rains), and the entire peninsula of Florida (all the way to the Keys). Also, the precipitation for the same winter period is forecast to be strongly above average for the entire east coast of the US and Canada. Lets see what happens. We'll be in Florida exploring the entire peninsula this deep winter regardless. What we saw in outh and North Carolina just this past week is a precursor (but not the exact same set-up) to what we can expect this winter all along the deep south if the TCMSCO pans out.

The WeatherBell winter temperature anomaly revision looks somewhat similar to the Two-class Monthly & Seasonal Climate Outlook; especially the "normal band": in the center latitude, and the warmer northern latitudes winter temps for North America...
  • Thanks for the info. This gives us some good info.
  • Don't know why the stop in Waco...but hey.

Leaving Illinois the end of December I'd recommend you head straight to Quartzsite because the major festivities happen during January and the RV Show is mid-January. It's a fun time to be there to check out all the RVers. January in Quartzsite can be 70 deg during the day and around 40-50 deg at night. As you know, weather is not predictable and colder temps are possible in the desert. Regardless, at least you'll have SUN, which helps a lot.

Stay in Quartzsite until you tire but come March it starts getting very hot and folks start leaving (even during Feb). Then work your way back into other areas of Arizona that you want to explore. Spring flowers begin any time from mid-February on and sometimes in January. New Mexico is a lot colder in winter than Arizona - even the southern half so catching it on your return in April or May would be a lot more pleasant and you'd be able to get further north in NM.

    Have a good trip!
  • WE live down here (Mesa AZ) and we wonder that same thing!! Totally unpredictable!!

I've been impressed with the accuracy of this guy's forecasts over the last four winters, especially as he went out on the limb on 4/29/15. Does not look great for TX but the other three areas look warm/normal.

This is a updated version: Look at the warmth in the NW, but unfortunately dry.
  • Quartzsite.....normally pleasant. Have had a few days of wanting the A/C on.....and have had to wear a coat because of COLD. (last winter, snow on surrounding hills -- Bouse had first snow EVER on the ground). We usually leave by first of March.....it's getting a lot warmer by then.
