Gulf side sites are the largest and back up to sand dunes. Check the ReserveAmerica reservation site for descriptions of each site. You can walk to the beach from the campground but it's quite a hike. The campground is set back off the road. Riding bikes is easier. Also, there are many places to access the beach, some with facilities and some without. Most you'll need to drive to. We walked out the back of the campground on the trail all the way to the boardwalk that comes out at the road and then walked back to our campsite from there on the road -- almost 7 miles! Whew. We LOVE St. George Island State Park. Their 9 miles of private beach is great and the bay is beautiful. We enjoyed walking to the bay at the end of the campground via a very short easy trail during low tide several mornings. Everybody will tell you to take plenty of bug spray but that only applies during late spring and summer. If you go during winter there are no bugs and Feb./March are our favorite times to be there. Perfect weather.
