- CamsmomExplorerBeing from an area of North America where our venomous snake count is 0, I think we do pretty well just camping in the south. We have seen a few snakes here and there, and keep our distance. BUT, over run with diamondbacks and diameter of a softball, that is enough to keep us away from ST George!

We have stayed at both parks a lot. It is easier to get into St. George than to get into the beach campground at St. Joe. We always liked them both a lot. However, when we we went to St. George last year we were overrun by large Diamond Back Rattlesnakes. We were told not to kill them that they are protected in the park. I do not think that I will ever get my wife to go back there.
We were on site 25 at SGI July 15th thru the 23rd and I saw an absolutely huge Diamondback Rattler on the site next to us (26) middle of the day sunning. Snakes do not bother me at all having been raised up outside and an avid outdoorsman. However, this snake was pushing at least 5ft and diameter of a softball! Had this thing struck one of the many children running around the park and the isolation of the CG it would be terrible. Also saw a very large cottonmouth moccasin near the bay that wasn't a great deal smaller. Beautiful park and CG, but that rattler shook me up for a few days. I didn't dare step out at night without a very good flashlight! Lol - rwessExplorerWe have stayed at both parks a lot. - CamsmomExplorerNever stayed at St George, but love St Joseph. Stayed in both areas, I like the openness of the dunes are. We were there in the spring and in the fall and bugs were not bad at all. Dogs not allowed on the park beach, but welcome on the public beaches outside the park. We saw a big gator in the playground there! And neighbour saw a rattler on the path. Ranger said no one had ever been bitten there though. A few dogs, but they were fine too. Dolphins every day and lots of marine life on the bay side.
- gapeachyExplorerstayed at both like st joseph better, like shady pines area better than gulf breeze but gulf breeze fills up quicker. the bugs are real at st George, by the time you walk to beach and back your ate up. did not see snakes at either but had a pygmy rattler under our camper at st Andrews this year but I love the nature and animals.
- fla-gypsyExplorerOP, skeeters are a real concern whether you want to hear it or not. St Joseph has a nicer beach too
- Itching2goExplorer IIDo both have sites large enough for a 38 ft fiver? We checked both out when we were in the area this past April, but I'm embarrassed to admit that my memory is confusing the two. I recall that one seemed to be more 'big-rig friendly', but not certain which one.
- wowens79Explorer IIIJust got back from St George on Sunday night. We love going there, but we've never been to St Joe.
St George is very quiet down by the campground, and plenty of space away from people on the beach. It's an easy walk to the beach, but it is not beach front.
At night when the wind was not blowing, we did get eaten up by some bug. Sprayed down my arms and legs with deep woods off, and they didn't bother my arms and legs, but they attacked through my shirt. - LamanExplorerI have stayed in the newer portion of the St.Joe park and really like it, close to the beach with nice walkways across the dunes. The sites and roads are a little tight but doable.
I drove through St. George campgrounds scouting it out last week and will say that I feel it comes in second place. The campground is far from the beach and just as tight. Now stores and amenities are a little closer than St. Joe. - dahkotaExplorerSt. Joe is closer to the beach (Gulf Breeze sites) but many of the sites are tight, close together, and not private. Be very careful in picking sites.
St. George Campground is a little more spread out and the sites are roomier.
Both have bay areas and ocean areas, both have areas to get away from people all together, both are a fair distance from 'town.'
We love both and would stay in both but we are very picky about our sites in St. Joe's. If we could get one of our choice sites in Gulf Breeze campground, we would choose that. Otherwise, we would go to St. George.
