Stargazing

Want to spend a couple of days in the desert for some stargazing on the out skirts of Yuma. What kind of pass if any is required from the BLM and how do you know what is BLM and what is not. Thanks.

Cool. Just don't park in any low areas. If it rains hard, rivers run through there! That's true of most everywhere in the desert, even Quartzsite.

I think it's a permit/fee area. $40/2 weeks. $180/6 months. Water and dump at gas station nearby.

There's a free area down the road apiece.

Thanks all, I rode my scooter out to pilot knob yesterday and the surrounding area and talk to the camp host there. Just as you said. Thanks
  • Just started hobby of looking for agates, rock hounding. So far liking it,tumbling the rough rocks into finished stones.

Probably right. Poster left out the word 'day'

    Also,

    Rock Hounding
    noun
    1. the activity of searching for and collecting rocks, fossils, or minerals.

  • no pass required, check the BLM web site. Crystal Hills is nice dry camping. No longer BLM but US FWS. Road in is not so good, very rocky with pot holes. Fairly easy to tell where the old camp sites were. Rock hound during the star gaze at night. About 7 miles south of Quartzite.
