Suggestions for state or national parks and kayaking

Try the Current and the Jack Fork rivers in Southern MO. Miles and miles of kayaking and some nice campgrounds

Lake Superior PP (Ontario) - 11 hours is probably pushing it, but it's worth it.

How about Lake Ouachita in Arkansas? Big lake with lots of kayaking possibilities. The LOViT trail link has everything from easy rides through the forest to steeper, more difficult segments. There are COE CG's around the lake and a SP at the east end of the lake. We stayed at Tompkins Bend COE park. One can launch right from the lakeside campsites and also ride parts of the LOViT trail from the CG. Lots of other lakes and trails in the area. This might be closer to 12 hours, but a neat area to explore once you get there.

I will be in Door Co. over Labor day also. We stay at Egg Harbor CG. You feel like your in a big Nat. park up there with lots to do. I found this to be a good place to stay as you can drive to any of the small towns in 15 minutes. Don't forget to eat at White Gull Inn.

A big second to Chuck's recommendation for Door County, specifically Peninsula State Park. You can't do much better for hiking and biking, kayaking is good too as long as you're looking for open water (it's right on a bay) as opposed to river or stream. We've been going there every Labor Day for 10+ years and love it. You can still get a spot for a week in June but I wouldn't wait too long, no electric sites but still some tent/small RV. For a nice wooded site I'd suggest either Welcker's or South Nicolet Bay campgrounds. Both have easy access to the water and hiking & bike trails. Should be about a 7 hour drive from Fort Wayne depending on the time & traffic you run into around Chicago. Go for it, you won't be disappointed!

x2 - Janes Island SP in Maryland. Outstanding kayaking trails,we really enjoyed the paddling trail that takes you the Chesapeake Bay. We stopped for a picnic, swim and fishing. You can try crabbing too.

what about Turkey Run S.P. in your home state.

I think I am going to spend a few days there this year kayaking.

Ohiopyle State Park in western PA. Class 3-4 whitewater on the Youghiogheny River, great hiking trails, great mountain scenery, and nearby is Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house. My daughters still say it was the best vacation ever.
