Summer trip to Glacier National Park

I'm planning a trip West this summer and want to include at least a week at Glacier. Traveling in a 38' 5th wheel from Florida and am interested in Rv campgrounds near Glacier. Any recommendations?

Thanks, Andy & Violet

  • Book early.

Last Summer we were looking for spots one day ahead and most places to plug in were booked up. We got one night at KOA-west and it was good. Couple nights at North American RV Park (west side) that was OK but pretty basic. Johnsons and KOA were full on the east side but stayed 4 nights at Red Eagle Motel that also manages some RV spots. This was just a place to have hookups, no real facilities. Good price but low voltage issues in the afternoon with the heat wave that rolled through while we were there. North of the border we stayed at The Great Canadian Barn Dance that has some RV spots. A bit of a drive back to Glacier and a snafu getting in our spot due to poor reservations management but it turned out OK.
  • Depends on how you like to camp. Our choice, if we returned, would be to go back to St. Mary's. But it is sort of remote and no utilities.

I wouldn't schedule any sooner than July 1st. Going to the Sun doesn't open until after then sometimes. You would get only a small percentage of the park without it being open. We went in the end of June and were shocked that the road had just opened 4 days prior. We got lucky.
  • My favorite is Mountain Meadows in Hungry Horse (I think already mentioned above) It is not only a favorite at West Glacier, it is a favorite among all campgrounds for nice layout.

X2. West Glacier KOA is very nice and convenient. The Red Bus Tour picks up there and well worth the $100.00. The tour was fantastic, 10 hours long with many comfort/ rest stops. Lunch at Many Glacier Lodge is wonderful. Enjoy.

  • We stayed in Kalispell at the Rocky Mountain Hi RV park for a week. Decent park, good rates, and they let you wash your RV. We found the rates were excessive the closer to Glacier that we got.
  • We stayed at the Mountain Meadow Rv Park in Martin City. We loved the place. Was quiet for us, and not very far to the park entrance.
  • While you are waiting search this Forum in the RV Parks section for `Glacier'. A week may be a long time if you don't hike. Also, take the Indian bus tour instead of the Red Bus. They will pick you up at St. Mary's campground.
Hope you take your hiking boots. Grand Tetons are just down the road for more hiking.
