The Bend in the road at Bonneville salt flats.

My search came up empty, so hopefully someone has info. on this place.
Anyone ever camped there?
Thinking about taking a trip out there during the speed week salt flats races.
I'll be taking my 11yr old son and prefer to stay away the the party crowd.
Is the area big enough where we could camp off in the distance away from everyone or is it a limited area?
Lot of campers?
Campfires allowed?
  • Here's some info. There are some CGs in the area, but the article says that overnight parking isn't permitted on the flats.
  • Camping is not allowed on the salt flats, but the bend in the road is a mud flat where one can camp for free.
Just looking for anyone who has been there so I know what to expect.
There is a place down the road from the bend that some have talked about also.
    Both are free and primitive.
  • When we went there we stayed just off the East bound exit across from an overnight truck stop and restaurant. We stayed there with "salters" who invited us over. It was great. The only thing we did after we left was wash the undercarriage of the TV and trailer.
  • I double checked where we stayed by using Google Maps. It's the Leppy Pass Road Exit. Google Map it by plugging in Bonneville Salt Flats then zoom in and notice that across from the Salt Flats Café is a large dirt lot. That's where we stayed. It looks like it may be Exit 4. Leppy Pass Road turns into Bonneville Speedway Road.
  • Thanks, i checked it out on google and saw where you stayed.
I heard there is more free camping areas just down Leppy pass rd.

You're welcome. We ended up staying there for two nights. Visited with the "salters" parked there, shared tacos and beer. We had a great time. Saw the world land speed record broken that trip. Best part is that we pulled over to spend the night because we were tired, and ended up being invited over to the speed trials, ate with a team there. It was great!
