Carl, I was told that 4WD would be handy on the road to the Racetrack -- it sure was fun in some of those sandy slot canyons and washes they have in Death Valley. (We were shocked that off-roading was allowed in a national park.) And we are using BFG Rugged Terrain tires -- sort of a hybrid. I had All-Terrains on my Pathfinder, which were great on dirt but not so good on the highway -- rough and noisy. I started with Rugged Trails on the Pathfinder and they fell apart on rocky roads. So the Rugged Terrains seem really good so far, even on black ice. (At slow speeds, of course.) We have not done any serious mud yet -- that could be next week in Utah, though.
