We were camping at The Goosenecks SP above the San Juan River in Southern Utah and looking at the night sky. I overheard our neighbors complaining about a bit of cloud cover obscuring the stars. I then walked over with my binoculars to share with them. They had never seen the Milky Way before, and were incredibly amazed with their new awareness, and true clarity of that night sky.
Did the Milky Way look any different when you were on Pangaea?
The sky was much clearer from there.
Actually Pangaea is the name of a racing sailboat that I have sailed on for many years (35,000+ miles). We've raced from Victoria, BC, Canada to Maui, Hawaii several times. It's the ultimate boon-docking sky. Our navigator taught navigation at the Merchant Marine Academy, and was the captain of several NOAA research vessels. He could look at a small hole in the clouds, identify the star, get a quick sextant sight, and then another, and plot our position from that. I was in awe, and learned much about the night sky.
