Top Boondocking Modifications

I'm often asked what modifications are best to make one's RV more Boondocking friendly. After giving it some serious thought, here are my top five:

1. Solar Power
2. LED Lights
3. Oxygenics Body Spa Shower Head
4. AGM 6v Batteries
5. Memory Foam Mattress

  • I think you are doing it the right way Brian - make all the electrical mods so you get a good idea of what your power requirements so everything is sized right.

I've changed out everything to LED except for one fluorescent over the kitchen counter. And I have the LEDs to change it out, just haven't got it done yet.
  • We have the LEDs and the oxygenics shower head. Next for us will be solar. But I don't want to half-ass it. I'd rather save up and get something good and powerful. More power than we need.
  • Our trailer was designed with boondocking in mind. 185W high voltage panel solar, Morningstar MPPT controller 150AH AGM battery. I supplied marine light fixtures with LED arrays. I substituted three speed computer case fans for the Fantastic Fan (less than one tenth the power draw and quiet). I also set it up to use water filters including a General Ecology so that I can pull water out of streams or lakes and make it potable. I use a Morningstar Sure Sine 300W inverter, high efficiency, no moving parts (fan) this self limits as to what can be powered, e.g. coffee made with a French press. I also use a Victron battery monitor to keep about the 50% SOC.
  • Before solar I would want to do the math and have appropriate AGM battery capacity for my house batteries. Then I would size the solar to the battery bank, and use a good charge controller.

You've probably done this but for some folks solar = buy cheapest panel from Harbor Freight and stick on roof.

I'm ordering one of the shower heads - we still have the ones that came with the TC.
