Traveling to Montana, Wyoming and back to Rapid City, SD

I think the best NFS campground for big rigs like yours between Buffalo and Ten Sleep would be Tie Hack. No hookups (you won't need AC), but it's fairly new (13-14 years old) and has sites that will easily accommodate your big MHs. You can reserve sites now, but the ones not reserved go to first-come-first-served within a week or two of the planned stay. Sunday-Thursday you can usually find a site if you're there by 4.

If you want hookups, Buffalo has some nice commercial RV parks -- Deer Park, KOA and Indian Campground.

We also enjoy camping at Devils Tower. Our preference is usually the Parks Service campground inside the monument -- Belle Fourche Campground. But there are no hookups, so if it's too hot we prefer the KOA just outside the entrance.

Currently we are Volunteering in Custer St Pk. But we have 3 weeks off. Just after Sturgis, so timing is ok. Since our rigs are 40Ft will investigate "You show your route from West Glacier to East Glacier as a direct route." this route more closely.

Nice campground at Three Forks, MT, which is about halfway between Bozeman and Butte. We had no trouble with 43' mh and toad- although it was necessary to unhook toad. Camp Three Forks used to be a KOA, but is now private. We only spent the night there, but cute, quiet and very convenient. If the campground was really full, it might get a little tight. Montana Farms Bakery at the interstate is a great place for breakfast!

You may also want to double check your route from Butte to Glacier. We went to Missoula and north along the east side of Flat Head Lake.

Also...IF you can hang in Cody for a few days, plan on taking the toad to Red Lodge, MT and enjoying the Beartooth/Chief Joseph Hwys. Irma's is a must stop in Cody too. I 2nd Buffalo Bill SP, btw. We stayed at the CG farthest from Cody and really enjoyed it. It's right on the Shoshone River with access to the river for fishing. You might check fishing regulations though. It seems there are limits to when and size.

I just noticed one thing about your route. You show your route from West Glacier to East Glacier as a direct route. There is a length limit on that route. The problem is the road goes up (the garden wall). Narrow road with hair pin turns. Do not miss it however as it is beautiful. Take your toad or enjoy even better on one of the trams/buses. To get from west to east you will need to go around the park to the south. Have a great trip as it is always beautiful.

Assuming ur traveling during nice weather, there are many options in MT. The Columbia Falls RV Park is on the edge of town and nice. As you drive on MT 83 (seeley swan hwy) there numerous FS campgrounds on lakes. In Helena, the Lincoln Road RV Park is nice ( can ck out the Capitol and good food). In Great Falls, Dick's RV park is good (the lewis & clark discovery center, the fish hatchery and walking the riverfront trail). Lewis & Clark caverns state park is a little out of ur way but a worth stopping at , although not a lot of shade. there is a nice little rv park at Garrison. I have also stayed at fairmont hot springs rv park. Obviously, you'll want to stay in Glacier.

about 30 miles west of Cody there is a NF campground called Rex Hale, with elec. right on the river.
about 10 or 15 miles west of Cody is Buffalo Bill State Park. There are two camprounds...one is closer in to Cody, both on the water.
At Ten Sleep, there is a little rv park on the west side of town, on the edge of town.
Up near the top of Powder River pass (west of Ten Sleep), there is a water and dump station.
There are NF campgrounds across 16 from Ten Sleep to Buffalo, but not sure if any will hold you.

If you don't mind USFS campgrounds here are a few places you could look into.

There are lot's of campgrounds in the Black Hills, just find something you like and don't go during Sturgis.
It looks like you may be stopping at Devils Tower, there are both Forest Service campgrounds and a KOA.
There are a few USFS campgrounds between Buffalo and Ten Sleep along 16.



A number of campground in Cody that I have stayed at, one on the SE side of town and one West of town.

Fishing Bridge in the park. Grizzly RV park in West Yellowstone is nice.

Slightly out of your way but you can take Mt 1 at Anaconda, it is just a scenic route off of I-90. There is a very nice USFS campground on Georgetown Lake that even has electricity to some of the sites.

Spring Creek CG is near Big Timber, MT and is a very nice place to stay. It's very clean and well maintained with some of the friendliest staff you'll find anywhere.

We stayed at the KOA in Bozeman (great museum there, btw) then drove a short distance to Red Cliff CG in the Gallatin NP. It's right on RT 191 and I'm pretty sure there are sites plenty large enough for your rigs.

W. Yellowstone has a lot to choose from. We stayed at Grizzly's for a night before entering Yellowstone NP.

That route will take you right to the entrance of Little Big Horn battlefield, which is definitely worth a visit. 7th Calvary campground is just south of the battlefield at Crow Agency. Almost literally nothing between Spearfish and there, but a good road.
