Trinidad CA RV park choice

We have a 33' fifth wheel and will be camping along the CA coast this summer, including a few days in Trinidad. We are trying to decide between going to Emerald Forest of Trinidad or Sounds of the Sea. Has anyone stayed at either or both of these, and which would you recommend? Why or why not stay at either? Thanks.
  • The only place we have stayed in Trinidad has been Patrick's Point State Park...

But, here are actual campers' independent reviews on the parks you are considering...once you get to the link, scroll down for the parks you are asking about.
    Have a good trip.

  • Both are acceptable as an RV park. Not like the State Parks around but are both fine for using as a home base. If I was to need to stay at one of them, it would be Sounds of the Sea.
  • We have stayed at both and found them to be satisfactory. You should be happy with either one.
  • Sounds of the Sea -
Like access from road, versus Emerald Forest. Paved road in front of office is on a slope. I pull up to a flat area to park and visit the office.
Sites near office have no highway noise.
Open sites with no trees overhead. Redwoods loose a lot of needles. No sap because of no trees. Sun or light because of no trees, feels warmer than dark shade, and no fog drip from trees. You can tell I prefer no tree sites in the Pacific Northwest!
Close to Patrick's Point State Park, with plenty of walking and exploring opportunities.
The only disadvantage to Sounds of the Sea is the washing machine. If you open the lid when machine is in cycle, you will notice the water level is less than half full in a full load. That's how the machine is an energy saver. Not enough water to wash clothes with.
Sites are not private, though that is true with the other RV parks in Trinidad also.
It's a beautiful drive to Trinidad on the back road. Highway 101 is the fastest way to drive to Trinidad. Highway 101 is 4 lane through this area.
Visit the marine lab in Trinidad.

We've stayed at Emerald Forest. It's kind of secluded in the trees. Very shaded and a bit dark in the daytime. It's not on the water as I'm sure you know.
  • There is a nice campground at the southern edge of Humboldt Bay in Eureka that is right at the beach and the ocean.

For traveling around in CA the Tom Steinstra book is a great resource.
